Merton exhibited a critical approach not only to the abuse of women but to the power games behind it, including that of advertising, consumer capitalism, and militarism. He also genuinely encouraged women in leadership roles, praising their “refusal to remain passive.”

Clearly, Merton was on the side of the women’s awakening from its beginning stages in the early 1960s onward. He can be called a “feminist theologian,” and I think he would have taken the epitaph as a compliment, not a charge of heresy.
